Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Rotary was founded in the year 1905 on February 23rd at Chicago in the United States of America.
The Rotary Foundation is the giving arm of Rotary and it is through the good offices of the foundation that the 1.2 million Rotarians are able to do the great work that they do. At the 1917 convention, outgoing Rotary president Arch Klumph proposed setting up an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” That one idea and an initial contribution of $26.50, set in motion a powerful force that has transformed millions of lives around the globe.
The six focus areas of the Foundation are
PEACE being one of the important six focus areas of Rotary and the one significantly vital for World’s prosperity, growth and it’s sustenance of communities. It is best to act upon bringing in peace and harmony in the world around by starting with bringing in the inner Peace to an individual. The impact is multifold, when people across the World come to gather, at the same time, to practice mindfulness, take the pledge for their Inner Peace that collectively transmits into a World Peace.
This project brings out the true strength of the international fellowship of Rotarians across the World doing a project at the same time, across the world.
It was a cold evening, on 23rd February 1905, that a young lawyer in Chicago, Illinois named Paul Harris called for a meeting of three of his friends, who met at Room No 711, Unity Buildings, Chicago which is considered the 1st of the Rotary meeting.
This lead to create a unique global network of fellowship through service that later came to be called the Rotary International. To mark the founding of this remarkable social experiment, this day is now called the Rotary World Understanding & Peace Day (WUPD) February is the month when the anniversary of our Rotary organization is celebrated. On 23rd Feb, 2018, the 113th anniversary of Rotary International, will be celebrated.
The month of February is also designated as Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution month. Creating peace and world understanding has been the fundamental objective of Rotary’s various programs and initiatives. This has become all the more significant in today’s time of turmoil across the globe. In this month, let us all Rotarians set up our efforts in supporting Rotary’s programs for peace and continue Making a Difference.
